WE NO LONGER SHOW OUR ALPACAS. The truth of the matter is: WE NO LONGER HAVE THE TIME! Are our alpacas worthy of the show ring? You bet, come see.
We breed and raise our alpacas for their luxurious fiber. Since we're now retired, we visit the barn several times a day. This has conditioned them to not be frightened when humans are about. Every Sunday morning the herd is weighed in. Weights are logged and tracked. We have avoided several potential health issues by keeping an eye on their weight, especially the cria (babies).
Mostly, they're not handled. We work around them, touch them once in a while, and provide a clean environment for them to be safe and their precious fiber clean. When we give tours, visitors tour the barn and many times are able to hug an alpaca :-) They are peaceful and non-aggressive, very approachable even for young children.
Bottom line, we want them healthy to produce the best possible fiber which we harvest annually. Thus, their stalls are swept, pooh picked up from their paddocks, water bowls cleaned (we use automatic waterers), vitamin/mineral pellets fed once daily, and hay boxes checked and refilled as necessary. Easy stuff.
We benefit from all this care we give our alpacas. We get to stay in shape without paying club dues!
