Dark Step (2024)

Dark Step

Dark Step (1) Article
Dark Step (2) Combos

Dark Step is a leg-based fighting style obtainable in the First Sea, but it can also be obtained in the Second and Third Seas.

While Dark Step is equipped, Aura appears on the player's legs instead of their arms while activated. This is entirely visual and provides no additional buffs compared to Aura on the arms in the same stage.

This fighting style has an "upgraded" variant named Death Step, which is only obtainable in the Second Sea (or Third Sea).

The user spins really fast and sets both of the user's legs on fire, increasing Dark Step's damage by 1.22x for around 60 seconds.
  • When used 100 times, the flames then cover more of the user's legs, increasing the damage boost.
  • 90 second cooldown.
  • This also deals damage after the leg lights on fire, but it's best not to use it for doing damage since it does the same amount of damage as a singular M1 click.

Pros
Dark Step C (Barrage) also has good stunning skills.
All moves are AoE.
Dark Step Z (Flying Kick) has an aiming feature.
Dark Step's X and C moves deals damage to Sea Beast
Good damage with Overheat activated.
Good for farming in First Sea.
The cheapest fighting style out of all the fighting styles (Excluding "Combat", which is automatically given for free upon joining the game.)
Flying kick has some air mobility.
Decent combo potential.
Low mastery requirements.
Break Dance is good at hitting Venom and Shadow users while they are hitting you with their flight.
Easy to grind early game if the player uses an Elemental/Chop/Buddha Fruit and an auto clicker.
Useful for First Sea grinding due to low knockback and high AOE.
Known for its great stuns and damage (Overheat V), used in early bounty hunting in the First Sea, though not recommended to do so.
Cons
“Barrage" leaves you vulnerable and is easy to dodge.
Overheat has an extremely long cooldown (1 minute).
Slowest click speed out of ALL the fighting styles, unless you have a autoclicker (Combat is slightly faster).
Slow and weak in PvP and is not good for Fruit Mains. It's recommended to just get Death Step.
"Breakdance" will lower your hitbox, which could be problematic, especially when paired with Buddha, as it removes the invulnerability against some moves, e.g, Mythological Pirates' Electric X. It can also drown you if you are too close to the sea surface.
Pairs badly with Buddha, as the click attack is slow and weak, and most moves can't hit in Shift form.
Hard to grind late game, due to high Elemental level requirements and how bad it is with Buddha.
Lowest damage Fighting Style (excluding Combat).
Using Overheat can leave you a very easy target since it has a long animation.
Breakdance locks you in place.
Barrage is easy to cancel, as a single hit will stop the move.
Flying Kick is very slow.
High startup lag.
If you miss Breakdance during PVP, you'll be left in a vulnerable state as the move has endlag.
Be careful with the V move when you are using this fighting style for grinding, as the move flings NPC's rather far.
Most of the skills are closed range.
Flying Kick has extremely high startup lag for players with unstable connections.
Tips
This is a good Fighting Style for beginners. This style could theoretically also be good even until late game, since it has very high damage with Double Overheat activated. It doesn't have much knockback either, so it can be very good for grinding.
However it is suggested that you go after Water Kung Fu or Electric instead because of the more varied moves.
If you are trying to get Superhuman, try to grind mastery on this last because it does low damage and can be difficult. You can feel bored trying to do this first.
Trivia
If the user uses Overheat, and goes into Light flight, the flames will get messed up.
If Overheat is used over 100 times, the user will have both legs on fire upon using Overheat again. Similar to Death Step's V move which doesn't have a requirement for both legs to be on fire and has it from the start upon use.
If the user uses Overheat, and then switches to another fighting style, the user's legs will still be on fire without an expiration timer. Hence, it is possible to get both flame legs and flame fists by activating Overheat and equipping Dragon Talon. This effect only gets removed if you die or rejoin, and is purely cosmetic if you switch to another style. The expiration timer is however restored if you use Overheat/Overheat Flames again.
The damage multiplier is only applied while using Dark Step or Death Step's moves, so you cannot use this to get extra damage on other moves.
If you have Dark Step or Death Step equipped, your Aura stages will start at your legs, instead of your hands.
The C move is similar to Rubber's Rush.
If you use the C move and quickly switch fighting styles while holding it, you will be stuck in the animation.
This is the first fighting style to have 4 moves instead of 3, the second being its successor, Death Step.
In the Update 9 rename, Dark Step was almost renamed Fire Feet.
Equipping Death Step/Dark Step and climbing a ladder, you would climb with your legs instead of your hands.
This Fighting Style can be bought in all three seas.
This Fighting Style is chronologically the first fighting style (aside from Combat) that you can purchase if you follow the quest line.
