Description[]

To acquire horses, the player must build a stable in their settlement, then travel to Hornica and purchase the horses available for sale at the stable there. Horses are available in 8 different colour variations.

Foals (Colts and Fillies) mature at 1.5 years of age (6 seasons). Horses have an average lifespan of 31.25 years (125 seasons), or minimum life span of 25 years (100 seasons). This is independent of the number of days per season a player sets. Mares have a 20% chance times the number of stallions available in the stable, per season, to produce a foal. For example, a mare housed with 2 stallions has a 40% chance to have a foal per season. Each mare can produce a maximum of 1 foal per season, depending on how many empty slots you have available in the stable. Horses do not require an animal breeder to be employed at the stable to be fed. Horses will also produce manure, but it can only be collected off of the floor of the stable by the player and not an employed animal breeder. Despite the name, animals do not need an animal breeder to breed.

Horses can be breed for different color patterns. A black Stallion and a bay appaloosa Mare can produce offspring with different coats: black, black appaloosa, bay, and bay appaloosa. There appear to be 2 colors (bay and black) with three color patterns (solid, appaloosa, and roan). Flaxen chestnut does not have pattern variants.

Each foal consumes 0.6258 units of animal feed per day, and each adult horse consumes 1.251 units of animal feed per day.

Horses glow blue in the Inspector Mode if the player has unlocked the Tracker perk.

Resource Production[]

Horses assist in transport for the player and goods. Foals can not be ridden or transport anything. Upon hunting and skinning, an adult horse yields 6 leather and 25 meat, while a foal yields 3 leather and 18 meat.

Riding[]

To mount a horse, the player must equip it with a saddle. Horses can trot, gallop, and jump over obstacles, the latter two consuming stamina. Horse riding speed can be increased by the Night Rider perk, while the stamina consumption rate can be reduced by the Skilled Rider perk, and by equipping the mount with horseshoes. To do this, the player must open his own inventory (I), transfer the horseshoes to the horse's inventory, and then open the horse's inventory while mounted (H) and equip them from there. A horse's speed is faster than that of a donkey

While mounting a horse, the player cannot use any tools or weapons except for torches which are held in their off-hand. The torch can not be used to chase off wolves while being mounted though.

The Village Whistleblower perk allows the player to instantly summon their mount regardless of its location, by pressing "G" as default.

Transportation[]

The player can transfer items between their inventory and their mount, which has a default carrying capacity of 25 kg. When overloaded, horses will move slower, cannot gallop, and cannot be summoned. Their carrying capacity can be expanded by the Carrot and Stick talent, and by equipping them with a saddlebag, which is done in the same way horseshoes are, as explained above.

Horses can take fall damage from jumping off high elevations. They can also lose health from being attacked by aggressive wild animals, especially wolves, or by bandits. They will die if their health depletes to 0.
