Loot’s Season 1 finale was an emotional roller coaster full of hilarious highs and loathsome lows.

The Apple TV+ comedy, partially inspired by Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott’s divorce, was created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard. The duo worked with Loot star MayaRudolph on their 2018 dramedy, Forever. So when it came time to cast their 2022 comedy, they knew they wanted Rudolph as their lead. Season 1 proved Rudolph was the perfect person for the job, and after that chaotic finale we can’t wait to see more.

Season 1, Episode 10, “The Silver Moon Summit,” dropped on August 12, leaving viewers with more than a few cliffhangers. There are lingering questions about on-screen romances, Molly’s money and reputation, and the future of the Wells Foundation. While we impatiently await a second season, let’s unpack Loot’s entertaining ending.

What is Loot’s Plot Summary?

Loot tells the story of Molly Wells (Rudolph), who becomes the third richest woman in the world after her billionaire husband John Novak (Adam Scott) cheats on her. Newly single and searching for purpose, she sets out to make something of herself by finally taking an interest in her charitable organization, The Wells Foundation. Led by the hardworking, no-nonsense Sofia (MJ Rodriguez), Molly and her assistant Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster) work alongside Howard (Ron Funches), Arthur (Nat Faxon), and a team of kind-hearted do-gooders in hopes of making a positive impact in the world. But it doesn’t take long for Molly to learn that being a benevolent billionaire isn’t as simple as it sounds.

Loot Ending Explained: Season 1 Finale Recap

The Season 1 finale, aptly titled “The Silver Moon Summit,” finds Molly and team attending The Silver Moon Summit in Corsica. Molly agrees to help her wealthy new man Jean-Pierre Voland (Olivier Martinez) present his Arroyo Water Purification Machine at the summit, so the Wells Foundation team flies in for support. After welcoming everyone to a gorgeous Corsica mansion, Molly pulls Nicholas aside and apologizes again for missing his play. She heads to meet Jean-Pierre, while Howard, Nicholas, and Arthur take time to explore the island and bond.

Before Molly’s big speech, Sofia shares a few concerns. “I don’t think you should do this. Don’t do this presentation tomorrow. Make up an excuse. Let’s pack up and go home, there’s plenty of work for us there,” she begs. Sofia goes on to challenge Molly’s involvement in the summit, asking, “Do you think this is your vision?” Molly apologizes for trying to find happiness after her divorce and says, “I’m not surprised you’re judging me though, because nothing I do will ever be good enough in your eyes… It’s going to go great tomorrow, and I don’t need your permission to do anything because it’s my money.” Ouch.

As the ladies fight, the guys have major heart-to-hearts on a beautiful Corsica beach. After vaguely telling Nicholas and Howard that he ended things with his wonderful girlfriend Chelsea, Arthur sees a bird that reminds him of the painting Molly gave him and gets emotional. After falling off a horse and “seeing his life flash before his eyes,” he tells his pals he’s in love with Molly but feels he’s in an unwinnable billionaire vs Bed Bath & Beyond coupons type competition with Jean-Pierre. Howard and Nicholas assure him that a nice normal guy like himself would be good for Molly.

At last, it’s presentation time, and Molly welcomes rapper, actor, and multimedia superstar GaTa to stage to help with the demonstration. She explains the water filtration machine should turn a bucket of poop-brown sludge into two glasses of fresh clean water within seconds, while also producing electricity. She lets it do its thing, but unfortunately the water is a putrid rusty brown. GaTa is revolted and refuses to drink his glass, even after Molly whispers she spent $3 billion on the machine and will double whatever they’re paying him. Knowing her and Jean-Pierre’s reputations are at stake, Molly summons the strength to drink the murky water and nearly blows chunks on stage. She downs the entire glass and runs away swearing.

While recovering in her hotel room, Molly receives a text from John that reads, “I saw what happened. Are you okay? Please call me.” Then Jean-Pierre checks in and suggests he and Molly run away for a few years, but turning her back on promises doesn’t sit right with our girl anymore. Molly leaves Sofia and the team a note saying she’s completely stepping away from the foundation. As she’s about to fly home on her private jet, Sofia surprises her. “I like you and we need you. You pulled us together and you made us better,” she says before rejecting Molly’s resignation. Molly reveals she broke up with Jean-Pierre, then she’s struck with a brilliant idea: She’s going to change the story.

To the surprise of *checks notes* everyone, Molly returns to the summit and interrupts a panel to discuss “yesterday’s huge f*ck up.” She gives a brave, bold, extremely unexpected speech and declares, “Billionaires shouldn’t exist. I shouldn’t exist. I’m grateful that I’ve gotten to know a few people who have been telling me this for a while now and I think I’m finally starting to hear them.”

You can relive Molly’s glorious epiphany here:

Then she ends the speech by saying, “So starting today I’m going to give away all my money — all $120 billion.” GASP!

Molly knows she’ll screw things up along the way, but promises to do her best “to get to zero” and help as many people as she can. Before she wraps up, she challenges any other “ridiculously wealthy people” watching to do the same. “Otherwise it’s not philanthropy, it’s just PR bullsh*t,” she concludes.

After Molly’s badass speech she receives another text from thirst master cheater John: “Holy sh*t! You’re full of surprises. I have to see you. When can we meet up?” GAG. Get outta here, dude! You had your chance.

All signs point to Arthur about to pour his heart out, but we don’t get to hear his speech. Instead, the show cuts to the following morning. We see Molly’s dress on the floor. She’s hungover in bed next to a man who we assume (and hope!) is Arthur. She opens the shades and says, “Oh my god, things got pretty crazy last night didn’t they?” Then, out of the bed pops JOHN, who delivers the season’s infamous last line: “Yeah, things got really crazy.” Ugh!

Is Apple TV+’s Loot Renewed For Season 2?

In July 2022, after just five of its 10 episodes premiered, Apple TV+ renewed Loot for a second season. That means Molly and friends will return to clear quite a few things up. While it remains unclear when Loot Season 2 will premiere, the company also signed a first look deal with Animal Pictures, Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne’s production company. It looks like Apple is betting big on Rudolph, and we’re certainly not mad about it.
