How To Unlock Ingredients For The Canteen
Quest Givers Allow You To Unlock Ingredients
Quest Givers are important NPCs that give you quests to finish. Once you finish these quests, you will unlock the ingredient for the canteen. Even if you have the ingredient with you, if you did not complete the quest given, it will not be added to the Canteen.
Quest Givers Can Be Found All Over The Map
Quest Givers can be found in Astera with an exclamation point above their head. They can also be found in different locales. Once you interact with these NPCs, they will automatically give you the quest in order for you to unlock ingredients for the canteen!
Most ingredients will be obtained by naturally progressing and beating the story, completing optional quests given by certain NPCs, and by gathering materials while out in the world.
At the start of game you can only choose two different food selections for your custom meal. You can upgrade the Canteen two times through "Optional Quests", each allowing for two more menu items, making a total of 6 ingredients. (This is by last boss, perhaps more Canteen upgrades past HR40).
A full plate of fresh ingredients is a 100% chance to land your Food Skills. What's important to know here is that each ingredient belongs to a category. Those are Courage, Resilience, Vigor, Acumen, Artillery, Perception, and Fortune. You'll get a different bonus if you include two, four, or six of each type.
Each level works as follows: Level 1: Activates 25% of the time. Level 2: Activates 50% of the time (requires Free Meal Secret)Level 3: Activates 75% of the time (requires Free Meal Secret)
Pick up the tempered tracks and hope you get a 9* investigation. All the other 9* optional missions are gated behind those or when you hit HR100 for the sapphire star one. The 9* optional quests are mostly gained from doing all the preceding optional quests, yes.
You will need all 12 drinks unlocked to get the skills. Once you have them, make custom meals in the favorite section of the canteen to always have these at hand. For Felyne Carver (hi) you will need all 6 green drinks, and for Felyne Lucky Cat all 6 golden drinks.
You can either wear armor with the Health boost skill, eat fresh foods before each quest, or bring Mega Nutrients to each quest and drink a few before you start. But nothing will increase it permanently. edit: (also Max potions or Ancient potions will max your health bar out until you faint or complete the quest.)

Food ingredients can be obtained by purchasing them, from foraging in the wilderness, from Fish, or from Monsters. Recipes are obtained by default from the upgraded kitchen, by buying food, or from random Events that occur around Moonbury Town. The amount of Health & Stamina recovery depend on the food Grade.
Rations can be obtained by using the Canteen's Oven Roast feature. They are not used in any Crafting. An identical EZ version can be found in the Supply Box during Quests, but these are discarded at the end of the Quest.
