Great Axe Overview

The Great Axe is a DPS/Tank weapon designed to specialize in grouping up enemies and hitting them with its incredibly high damage single target focused attacks. Given the nature of grouping enemies up, it has a number of AoE damage tools. It’s a strong PvP weapon with its high damage and absurdly high catch potential.

The Primary use of the Great Axe is in the Damage Category. While the Great Axe is a slow weapon and may not be the absolute highest DPS, it does however have wide sweeping attacks that can cleave through multiple foes. This makes it great at dealing with one or multiple targets in most engagements.

The Secondary use of the Great Axe is Disruption and Utility. It has a lot of tools to catch enemies as well as prevent them from escaping from you or a group. These come together to give the Great Axe strong utility to back up its slower, heavy hitting attacks. These same tools can also be used to fill a more off-tank role, by pulling and grouping up multiple targets.

Great Axe Skills, Passives and Perks

First we’ll lead off with the skills and passives. We’ll talk a bit about each, their uses and how effective they are. There’s a lot to cover here, so we’ll break it down per tree to keep things organized.

Alongside the general information, They’ll be given a Rating from C up to S tier for both PvE and PvP. C tier is exclusively for the passives that are not that great, either being forced by another upgrade or generally useless. A and B Tiers are middling tiers, putting them between the worst passives and the best, leaning one way or the other. S tier are the good passives, the ones you’re almost always going for if you pick up a skill or want to because it’s useful in many scenarios.

The Reaper Tree

The Reaper tree specializes in catching foes while dealing high single target damage. The Active skills for the Reaper Tree consist of Reap, Charge, and Execute.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (1)Reap

Reap extends your Great Axe out 5 meters to pull enemies to you, dealing 60% Weapon Damage. This skill can also be used with a Carnelian Gem to apply a 4 seconds taunt on hit.

This skill tends to be highly favored in PvP, and for good reason. It can allow you to quickly pull one enemy out of position isolating them, or grouping several enemies together for easy follow up from any number of other AoE skills.

This skill has an 18 second cooldown, making it the shortest cooldown of the Great Axe’s skills.

Reap Rating: A – PvE, S – PvP

Out of the two options for grouping AI enemies up, this is the only one that can also be made to taunt, letting you play an off-tank role more effectively. It also has a longer reach compared to the radius of Maelstrom. Couple this with the ability to heal off the damage it deals and a second attack, it becomes much more versatile.

In PvP, this is a skill that’s tough to be without in a lot of matchups, especially against ranged foes. Combined with Charge and Gravity Well, it contributes to the Great Axe’s catch potential to a high degree.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (2)The Collector

The Collector extends Reap’s range to 8 meters.

This helps to make Reap more reliable, as the extra range helps to catch foes from a bit farther away. This extra distance actually helps catches foes that may try to Light Roll away from you in PvP.

The Collector Rating: S – PvE and PvP

If you’re using Reap at all, there’s little reason to not get this upgrade. It makes it more reliable and effective at fulfilling its purpose.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (3)Hunger

Hunger heals you for 30% of the damage dealt by Reap.

While a 30% ratio on a heal from an attack sounds great, it’s pretty minor overall for 1v1 situations in PvE or PvP. If you’re landing it on multiple foes, it can make a difference.

Hunger Rating: B – PvE and PvP

Healing is useful, but you won’t be healing for much without hitting multiple targets. Since most enemies in PvP will have higher armor values than most AI mobs, it’s not particularly effective there either, only healing for a small fraction of your health per target.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (4)Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction adds an additional spin attack that deals 115% Weapon Damage after pulling a target.

This adds a second hit that Hunger can heal from, it’s also a stronger hit that cna heal for more. It does make you a little less vulnerable as the normal recovery time gets moved to after this attack instead of after the pull.

Fatal Attraction Rating: S – PvE and PvP

The extra hit helps make Hunger super useful in PvE situations, allowing it to recover more health against groups of enemies. In PvP there’s a slight risk against other melee weapons, as blocking can prevent the pull but still trigger the second attack making you slightly more vulnerable. Though, the wide swing of the follow up will prevent a lot of weapons from following up without trading damage.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (5)Charge

Charge has you wind your Great Axe back, before charging forward 10 meters, dealing 120% Weapon Damage when you reach a target or press your Attack Key. You have Grit during this attack, preventing the skill from being interrupted by staggers.

Charge is a pretty versatile skill, providing a huge burst of mobility while also dealing fairly high damage that only gets stronger with upgrades.

With a Cooldown of 20 seconds, Charge is one of the Great Axe’s shorter cooldowns.

Charge Rating: S – PvE and PvP

Charge is one of those skills that’s highly recommended to use in almost every setup. The mobility boost is always welcomed at lower levels, allowing for quicker travel. The damage potential also makes it a fairly decent skill to weave in between other attacks

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (6)Frenzied Momentum

Frenzied Momentum scales Charge’s damage dealt with distance traveled. Charge will deal 120 – 140% Weapon Damage based on distance.

Since this is primarily used as a gap closer or disengage, this just makes it a bit more impactful, despite already being one of your quickest abilities to use overall.

Frenzied Momentum Rating: S – PvE and PvP

This is purely a damage booster. While Charge isn’t often used in PvE for damage outside of moving from mob to mob, this still has a pretty good effect to make use of when possible. It’s basically free damage.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (7)Unpredictable Strike

Unpredictable Strike enables you press your Block button during Charge to execute a wide swinging attack that deals 140 – 165% Weapon Damage based on distance traveled.

This is strictly an upgrade for the previous bonus, now increasing the damage and covering a wider area with the ending hit.

Unpredictable Strike Rating: S – PvE and PvP

There’s nothing to dislike about this. It takes a previous bonus and makes it even stronger. The added AoE is a really nice benefit, as the default swing covers a much more narrow area in front of you.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (8)Execute

Execute is a powerful Overhead Attack that deals 200% Weapon Damage. This damage ratio is increased to 250% Weapon Damage against foes under 50% Health.

Execute is the Great Axe’s strongest attack, but also comes with the longest windup. This means without any kind of setup, it can be unreliable in 1v1 situations.

With a cooldown of 25 seconds, Execute is one of the Great Axe’s longer cooldowns.

Execute Rating: S – PvE, A – PvP

Execute is significantly stronger where you can get a guaranteed critical hit through the Backstab mechanic, making this skill hit insanely hard and chunk bosses down quite hard in PvE.

In PvP this skill heavily relies on Gravity Well or support from another weapon to get the best use out of it. It does however hit incredibly hard and can worth trying to fit into your build if you have multiple setups for it.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (9)Unstoppable Greed

Unstoppable Greed adds Grit to Execute’s animation, giving you immunity staggers and other soft CC effects like knockback and knockdown.

For how long the animation of this skill is, this can make Execute a meaningful way to trade into an attack that may otherwise stagger you.

Unstoppable Greed Rating: A – PvE and PvP

Usually Grit isn’t a highly necessary thing, however for this slow of a skill it can be very impactful. It makes Execute a strong option to trade blows in both PvE and PvP, giving you an easy way to get damage in, when you otherwise might have had to block.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (10)Executioner

Executioner makes Execute a Guaranteed Critical against foes under 30% Health.

Usually, low thresholds are a painful thing to play around. However this one just outright makes the skill crit below 30% health, which is insanely powerful.

Executioner Rating: S – PvE and PvP

The only time you shouldn’t pick this up is if you’re playing as strictly a DPS in groups. If you’re not tanking, this guaranteed critical hit will not be necessary as you’ll be freely getting critical hits via Backstabs.

In PvP this can give you some absolutely insane 1v1 power, but comes at a cost generally, as you’d have to drop Charge or Reap for it. This means you’re trading catch power for raw damage potential. It can still be a great trade off if you can make it work.

Reaper Tree Passives

The passives of the Reaper Tree help you do two things: Catch opponents and take them down. It’s mostly focused on damage and mobility perks, which let you do the things the Great Axe is known for, especially in PvP.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (11)Critical Gains

Critical gains heals you for 10% of your Critical Strike Damage dealt by any Great Axe Attack.

With a lot of bonus critical chance and backstabs existing, this can amount to a lot of free sustain.

Critical Gains Rating: S – PvE and PvP (A as Tank/Bruiser)

While Critical Hits are guaranteed to you as a DPS in groups, if you’re a tank or bruiser, they won’t be as free. This can make this a little less impactful, but given most builds for the great axe can have you hitting for thousands at a time, it can also mitigate plenty of damage still.

When you do have those free Critical Hits, this will heavily reduce your need to heal after taking AoE damage from boss attacks or damage from adds. It won’t entirely replace a potion or a healer, but it will help them keep you up much easier with less of their focus being put on you.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (12)Frustration

When your opponent blocks an attack, gain 15% damage for 10 seconds. This effect is limited to a single application.

This is a more PvP oriented passive, but certain enemies in PvE do block as well allow some limited use of this passive.

Frustration Rating: C – PvE, S – PvP

Due to the limited usage of this in PvE, this becomes a waste of a passive point. There’s too few enemies that will block or even have shields.

In PvP, there’s very high odds that most melee players will block an attack in some circ*mstances. While not guaranteed, it should trigger often enough to be a more than meaningful boost.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (13)Keen Edge

Keen Edge increases Critical Damage by 10%.

This is a pretty good damage increase for a Melee DPS playstyle. It’s free damage any time you position for Backstabs.

Keen Edge Rating: S – PvE, A – PvP

In PvE, this is generally just free damage unless you’re tanking. Even in that case, you’ll likely be carrying Execute for the damage and boosting its damage when the enemy you’re facing is under 30%.

Critical Hits are much less reliable in PvP however, making this slightly less valuable. It is however fairly easy to set up a good stun with another weapon to take advantage of this, so it’s far from awful.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (14)Feed

Feed grants 10% Lifesteal against foes under 30% health.

This is a bit of a weaker passive to have a low Threshold on. It’s still decent, but the threshold will often make it harder to use overall. It does make pairing it with Execute a very strong option, since you’ll heal for a high damage crit value instead.

Feed Rating: A – PvE and PvP

Despite the lower threshold, this is still boosting your overall sustain. However Lifestealing relies on high damage output. This can be great in situations like war where every hit could be hitting multiple people under 30%, or against expedition bosses.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (15)Greed

Greed grants 5% damage bonus for 5 seconds on successful Light Attacks, stacking up to 25%.

Often times Light Attacks will be your go-to for DPSing anything. So this becomes free damage.

Greed Rating: S – PvE, A – PvP

In PvE this boost is absolutely free. There’s no reason to not take this for a PvE build for any reason.

In PvP this can still be impactful, though you may not reach or maintain the full 25% bonus consistently. Even with just a couple stacks though, it is providing enough value to help you overall.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (16)Death’s Embrace

Death’s Embrace increases your Armor Penetration by 10% against foes under 50% health.

This is a pretty potent effect and always worth running, especially considering the reasonable threshold for the effect.

Death’s Embrace Rating: S – PvE and PvP

Getting to ignore a portion of your opponents armor is really powerful for just dropping them to 50% health. This situation happens often enough that there’s just no reason to ever not take it, especially in PvP where this can be way more impactful as players will typically have more Physical Resistance over other types of resistance.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (17)Critical Condition

Critical Condition increases your Critical Chance by 15% against foes under 30% health.

While this is a low Threshold, this is still a good enough bonus to warrant this low of a threshold. Critical hits can make or break most encounters.

Critical Condition Rating: B – PvE (S while Solo), S – PvP

If you’re playing as a DPS in a group, you’ll never really need this. You can just reposition for Backstabs for 100% Critical Chance. As a Solo DPS or as a Tank/Bruiser, this can still be incredibly good though.

PvP has the same context as Solo DPS, if you’re not able to freely backstab, it’s a powerful bonus to pick up.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (18)Executioner’s Speed

Executioner’s Speed grants a 20% Haste for 3 seconds when you hit two or more foes with a Light Attack.

Given this has the requirement of hitting multiple enemies, this actually tends to be a pretty situational effect outside of PvE. While it’s nice, Blood Lust does the same thing for just being within a certain range and looking at your opponent.

Executioner’s Speed Rating: B – PvE, C – PvP

The requirement of hitting multiple targets limits this to mostly PvE. Even in PvE, it’s not great but still has some limited uses like kiting a large group of enemies.

In PvP this is limited to basically Wars or large skirmishes, where the extra couple second of Haste aren’t going to matter anyways, because you’ll already to on top of someone to hit.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (19)Blood Lust (Reaper Tree Ultimate)

Blood Lust grants 20% Haste and 15% increased damage when looking at a foe that’s within 14 meters of you.

This is one of the biggest reasons it’s hard to get away from a Great Axe player. If you can’t break this range and keep at least that far away, they will just eventually catch you no matter how fast you run. Though, you can still play around this and make it take longer to catch you.

Blood Lust Rating: S – PvE and PvP

This is free damage no matter how you look at it. In PvP while people can zig-zag to make it harder to maintain this speed, it’s enough of a boost that you will often stick to them easier if they’re not breaking the range.

The Mauler Tree

The Mauler Tree is all about AoE. This Tree has all of our AoE Damage and the most important Catch Skill of them all, Gravity Well.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (20)Maelstrom

Maelstrom is a fast spin attack that pulls enemies within 2.5 meters and deals 110% Weapon Damage to them. With a Carnelian Gem slotted, this attack will also taunt for 4 seconds on hit.

This is a nice, quick AoE Skill, and one of the Great Axe’s fastest attacks.

With a cooldown of 20 seconds, Maelstrom is one of the Great Axe’s shorter cooldowns.

Maelstrom Rating: A – PvE, B – PvP

This skill is much more practical for PvE, where you’ll be able to hit multiple enemies all at the same time. It still has the risk to where if you’re pulling too many foes towards you, you can trap yourself and put yourself in a tough spot.

In PvP the Range is incredibly low, making it generally inferior to Reap, which works similarly but has much more range and can focus on pulling just one or two foes.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (21)Storm’s Reach

Storm’s Reach increases Maelstrom’s area of effect by 50%, increasing it to 3.25 meters.

This is a pretty solid upgrade, which does let you AoE even more with this skill.

Storm’s Reach Rating: A – PvE and PvP

This upgrade just makes the skill more reliable to use for PvE or PvP scenarios. It can actually make it a pretty decent skill for skirmishing as well, as you be able to group enemies together and trap them with a Gravity Well after.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (22)Absorb

Absorb allows Maelstrom to block Projectiles while the Maelstrom animation occurs.

This is a pretty niche, but useful passive. While I haven’t extensively tested it, it can block quite a few impactful abilities in both PvE and PvP.

Absorb Rating: B – PvE and PvP

While it has a decent space to impact the outcome of a lot of things, there are a few things that if this can block may be able to push it’s rating higher for both PvE and PvP. The big ones would be Cannon projectiles in Wars, and some of the more devastating projectile attacks from certain Expedition bosses.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (23)No Reprieve

No Reprieve adds an additional spin attack to Maelstrom, which deals 110% Weapon Damage. This makes the skill deal 110% Weapon Damage twice, while granting it Grit.

More damage on this skill is nice, especially when used in the correct ways. The extra animation time also extends the window which Absorb is active as well.

No Reprieve Rating: S – PvE and PvP

If you’re using the skill, there’s no reason to skip out on this. It’s extra damage, which thanks to the initial pull of the first hit, can be very hard to avoid.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (24)Whirlwind

Whirlwind is a spin attack that deals 50% Weapon damage to all nearby foe with each hit. This hits a maximum of 4 times for a total of 200% Weapon Damage and cannot Backstab. This ability has grit, preventing you from being staged out of the animation.

This skill would be much harder to use without the Grit, which makes it at least usable in PvE. It;s still harder to use in PvP due to the more readily available hard crowd control options like Stuns.

With a cooldown of 30 seconds, Whirlwind is the Great Axe’s longest cooldown.

Whirlwind Rating: B – PvE, C – PvP (B in PvP when fully upgraded)

With Whirlwind now having natural Grit, it’s much easier to make good use of this skill. It actually take a proper stun to interrupt it and it feels great for PvE. It’s still going to be nearly impossible to use in PvP.

This skill really just lacks the power it needs to do actual damage, and heavily relies on critical hits to get much done. Thanks to its perk that grants Fortify, it can be a easy way to deal a ton of cleave damage, but you’ll do far more total damage with Light Attacks unless you’re completely surrounded, where Whirlwind AoE can let it be a more valuable choice.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (25)Gusting Winds

Gusting Wind allows you to spin a maximum of 7 times, instead of 4.

With Whirlwind having natural Grit, this is a fairly consistent damage bonus. It will also lock you in the Whirlwind animation longer, which can make you a sitting duck in PvP.

Gusting Winds Rating: A- PvE, C – PvP

With it adding another 150% Weapon Damage overall, it makes a solid pick up for PvE. The extra damage can actually make it a valuable farming tool.

In PvP however, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to stay in range of enemies without further upgrades, or without being stunned. Can be a nice combo with a melee range Gravity Well.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (26)Unending Winds

Unending Winds increases your movement speed while Whirlwind is active by 100%.

The extra mobility helps you at least stay on most targets. It’s not at all a guarantee as it’s mostly only negating the slow it inflicts when you use Whirlwind.

Unending Winds Rating: A – PvE and PvP

The extra mobility makes it easier to avoid being stunned out of Whirlwind, as you’re a bit more mobile. It’s not a perfect solution by any means, but does help a bit.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (27)Surrounded

Surrounded increases Whirlwind’s damage by 30% when surrounded by 3 or more foes.

Given the way this is worded, this would be increasing the damage of Whirlwind from 50% to 80% Weapon Damage per hit. This adds a total of 210% Weapon damage to the already existing 350% Weapon damage for a total of 560% Weapon damage over the duration of the skill.

Surrounded Rating: S – PvE and PvP

If you’re running this skill for any reason, this is the only thing that makes it slightly viable before you get the Chain Element or Fortifying Whirlwind Perks. With the insanely high total damage output, it may match or fall just under Light Attack DPS, but it can however trigger Chain Element more often.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (28)Gravity Well

Gravity Well has you throw your Great Axe dealing 25% Weapon Damage with an upward swing that creates a vortex, which pulls foes to its center for 4 seconds, while initially rooting for 1 second. The Gravity Well will explode after these 4 seconds, dealing 100% Weapon damage as Arcane. This burst is considered a ranged attack.

This skill gives the Great Axe a ton of its catching power, trapping you for a solid 4 seconds where you can’t run or dodge. If you want to avoid any skill being used by a Great Axe player, it’s this one.

With a cooldown of 30 seconds, Gravity Well is the Great Axe’s longest cooldown.

Gravity Well Rating: A – PvE, S – PvP

In PvE this can be great for bursting down groups of weak enemies and keeping them trapped in other AoEs. However against bosses or any enemies with Grit or that use the Enemy Stamina System, it’s only damage and doesn’t prevent them from getting to you nor hold them in place.

This ability is pretty much the King of PvP Skills. it’s the only ability that can prevent several people from escaping you or your allies AoEs or non-instant attacks. Plus add it the damage does on it’s own and it’s super strong overall.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (29)Crowded Well

Crowded Well increases the explosion damage of Gravity Well for each foe caught in the vortex. This stacks up to 5 times, for a 50% increase in damage.

This upgrade is what makes it very high demand for Wars and other large skirmishes. The more people you can catch in a Gravity Well, the more damage they all take.

Crowded Well Rating: S – PvE and PvP

This can be a huge damage bonus when used correctly. In fact, it’s impossible to really use incorrectly, being a free damage boost in general.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (30)Unyielding

Unyielding grants a 10% Fortify to allies standing in your Gravity Well.

This is generally a pretty useless passive. There are stronger fortify effects that last much longer. It really only grants you a small fortify while you attack an opponent caught in the Gravity Well

Unyielding Rating: C – PvE and PvP

While this can have some niche uses, it’s generally not going to be too impactful. There’s no way to extend the duration of Gravity Well, which makes this a very short-lived bonus. Pretty much the only niche use is for Wars, where you and a few others may be in your Gravity Well.

Mauler Tree Passives

The Mauler Passives are all about disruption and mitigation, with a slight touch of damage here and there.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (31)Mauler’s Resolve

Mauler’s Resolve grants you 40 Stamina when you get hit under 50% Health. This effect has a 20 second Cooldown.

Granted there’s an armor perk that does this, and does it better. This is pretty much a wasted point, even if you wanted the effect because of that.

Mauler’s Resolve Rating: C – PvE, B – PvP

While you can still opt to use this in PvP as it does has a lower and not shared cooldown with the armor perk, it’s generally not worth it. If you want to take it over Heavy Pull to reach Gravity Well, that’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do if you wish.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (32)Gravity

Gravity inflicts a Root for 0.33 seconds when you pull a target.

This in particular can make Heavy Pull a decent pick up, but for the general PvP setup, will be helping Reap and Gravity Well without that passive.

Gravity Rating: A – PvE, S – PvP

In PvE it can affect multiple skills as well as Heavy Pull, making it pretty helpful, adding a bit of a mini stun to your Heavy Attacks and pull skills. This short Root doesn;t do a whole lot for you in PvE

In PvP it’s pretty much the same, but that short Root actually makes it absurdly easy to lock down opposing players. With the typical PvP build, it’s a very potent tool for increasing your catch power.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (33)Center of Attention

Center of Attention grants 10% increased Damage when 3 or more foes are within 4 meters.

This is strictly a worse version of Hatchet’s Against All Odds, which isn’t a capped bonus and doesn’t require a minimum of three enemies. Though I can understand the reason they may cap this weapon in particular, as it has been a staple of Wars for a long time.

Center of Attention Rating: B – PvE and PvP (A in Wars)

In general, you’ll want to build fairly durable in PvE and want to take on large groups of enemies, making this passive great for that, but not always worth the point as there are better damage passives without strict requirements.

In PvP this can be great for large skirmishes and fantastic for Wars. However it’s useless in 1v1s and small skirmishes as you may not always have it active.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (34)Heavy Pull

Heavy Pull adds a pull effect to our Heavy Attacks.

This is a pretty niche passive, and generally only works well with Gravity also being taken. Without Gravity, this is pretty lackluster in general.

Heavy Pull Rating: C – PvE and PvP (B with Gravity)

Generally, Heavy Attacks will provide less overall damage, as you won’t stack your damage bonuses that require multiple hits nearly as fast. Even after the passives are stacked, they’re still easier to maintain with Light Attacks.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (35)Enduring Strike

Enduring Strike adds Grit to Great Axe Heavy Attacks as well as 12% damage reduction while this Grit is active.

This actually adds a ton of meaningful value to Heavy Attacks, especially in War situations where your whole goal would be to swing wildly and soak damage.

Enduring Strike Rating: B – PvE, A – PvP

In PvE this is still a bit less practical than going for repeated Light Attacks, as they have generally high DPS, but can give you a bit of added safety when thinning out large groups.

In large skirmishes and War scenarios, this gets a high value, letting you swing away and take less damage in the process. Your damage may not come out as fast, but you’ll also take less return damage.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (36)Revenge

When you block an attack with the Great Axe, gain 5% increased Damage for 5 seconds. Stacks 3 times to a maximum of 15% increased Damage.

Seeing as this requires you to block an attack, which is something you would often do anyways, this is free damage regardless of scenario.

Revenge Rating: S – PvE and PvP

While it may be a little unreliable to stack up and maintain, it’s still a fairly accessible and easy-to-trigger bonus. Even at the minimum bonus, it’s still a decent bonus.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (37)Crowded Protection

Crowded Protection grants you 20% damage reduction when 3 or more foe are within 4 meters while you’re holding a Great Axe.

This is another good bonus that helps the Great Axe deal with groups easier than individuals. This time instead of damage, it’s boosting your defenses.

Crowded Protection Rating: B – PvE and PvP (A in Wars)

Much like Center of Attention, this really shines in Wars and situations where there’s always going to be plenty of enemies around to keep it active. Without those situations it can fall a bit flat, but is still fairly easy to trigger in PvE or with the use of PvE enemies..

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (38)Mauler’s Fury (Mauler Ultimate)

Mauler’s Fury makes all attacks with the Great Axe grant 3% increased damage for 3 seconds. This bonus can stack up to 10 times for a total of 30%.

This is basically a slower-to-stack, but higher cap version of Greed. Since it stacks slower and last much less time, this final upgrade often isnt worth the points to get to it, especially with Greed existing for a single point.

Mauler’s Fury Rating: B – PvE, C – PvP

In PvE this can be a little more useful as it will be easier to stack and maintain for a bit in longer encounters. However one mistake can cost you all of your stacks. This often just makes Greed a much stronger passive for this reason.

In PvP, this just isn’t worth it, as the mobility and damage from Blood Lust are much more reliable and easier to use consistently.

Great Axe Perks

These perks can be found on armors and weapons. The perks modify skills beyond passives and can give them additional Utility These are often better slotted on Armor as Weapons have access to better perks overall.

It’s worth noting these perks also scale with Gear Score, so they will be weaker early on, but are good at later stages of the game and your progression. The value Range shown is for Gearscore 100-625

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (39)Refreshing Charge

Refreshing Charge reduces Charge’s Cooldown by when hitting a foe with Unpredictable Strike. This effect will only apply once per skill use. On Weapons, this reduces Charge’s cooldown by 29-54%. On Armor this will reduce Charge’s cooldown by 5-30% instead.

This requires Charge to be fully upgraded but adds extra value to the usage of the wide swing of Unpredictable Strike. When placed on a weapon, it can refund half for the cooldown giving the Great Axe a ton of mobility.

Refreshing Charge Rating: A – PvE and PvP

In PvE, this lets you use Charge as a reliable DPS tool as well as a movement tool. being able to deal 140% weapon Damage every short bit without a heavy attack makes it fairly good.

In PvP this really amps up our ability to chase people down. Compared to the Great Axe’s other perks, this one is well worth the consideration.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (40)Crippling Reap

Crippling Reap inflicts a Slow for 4 seconds when pulling an enemy under 50% health. On Weapons, this inflicts a 30-50% Slow. On Armors, this inflicts a 10-31% Slow instead.

This is a pretty potent slow for a skill that can be fairly reliable in PvP.

Crippling Reap Rating: C – PvE, S – PvP

Useless in PvE, as the slow is very short, and you’re pulling enemies to you that will only run to you.

In PvP however, this only boosts the Great Axe’s already high catch power. An added Slow to one of their catch skills is actually a pretty big bonus, especially with how strong it is at the higher end.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (41)Mending Execute

Mending Execute heals you for a portion of damage dealt by Execute. On Weapons, this grants 29-49% of damage dealt as health. On Armors, this grants 10-30% of damage dealt as health.

For High Damage builds and paired with Execute’s upgrades, this can easily heal for a large chunk of health. It’s not going to make it useful in PvP without setup, but can still be decent with good use.

Mending Execute Rating: A – PvE, C – PvP

In PvE this can be much easier to make use of and get more value out of, especially in group play where this skill can be made to always crit.

In PvP this value is lower, due to Execute absurdly low speed. However, it cna be useful, though not always enough to consider as a perk in your limited slots.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (42)Fortifying Whirlwind

Fortifying Whirlwind makes Whirlwind grant Fortify and Slash Damage on hit for 2 seconds. This effect can stack up to 5 times. On Weapons, this grants 9.1-15% Fortify and 7.5-12% increased Slash Damage, up to a max of 75% Fortify and 60% Slash Damage. On Armors, this grants 3.6-9.3% Fortify and 39% Slash Damage, up to a max of 46.5% Fortify and Slash Damage.

Since this grants upwards of 50% Fortify when on a weapon, as well as a significant damage boost, it can be well worth considering for PvE and PvP. While you’ll have a super small window to take advantage of the boost after Whirlwind, it can make it a much more useful and damage-heavy skill by itself.

Fortifying Whirlwind Rating: A – PvE and PvP

While Still niche for PvP, this can actually make it more reasonable to use if you manage to get in a position where you can cleave a ton of them without risk of interruption. In PvE, this makes the skill incredibly viable as a damage option, due to the number of hits it can inflict.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (43)Enfeebling Maelstrom

Enfeebling Maelstrom applies a Weaken for 8 seconds to enemies hit by the AoE created by the No Reprieve upgrade. On Weapons, this applies a 14-25% Weaken. On Armors, this applies a 3-14% Weaken instead.

This is a pretty nice utility upgrade for the skill, which can help its viability in every situation you’d want to use it. With it having a decently strong effect and duration, it’s pretty widely applicable if you want to run the skill.

Enfeebling Maelstrom Rating: A – PvE and PvP

Given you’d only run this skill for the potential AoE damage, this makes everything you pull in and land No Reprieve on also deal less damage to you, which helps to mitigate any return damage.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (44)Insatiable Gravity Well

Insatiable Gravity Well returns a portion of damage dealt back as health while dealing an additional 50% Weapon Damage in a 4m AoE around you. On Weapons, this returns 33-52% of damage dealt by Gravity Well as health. On Armor, this returns 15-34% of the damage dealt by Gravity Well as health instead.

This is an absolutely insane perk to get, and easily one of the best PvE and War perks for the Great Axe. Not only do you heal from an initial hit, you also heal from both bursts of damage.

Insatiable Gravity Well Rating: S – PvE and PvP

This already provides a good amount of healing even at the lowest value. At the upper end, it can actually just make Gravity Well a huge burst of health restoration when used correctly. Since most builds will opt for Gravity Well, there’s never a reason to not take this if you can get it.

Weapon Builds

There’s not really a ton of diversity for Great Axe builds at the moment, with one being highly favored over most others. However, we’ll try to provide a few options.

Expedition DPS Build

This build is focused more around PvE encounters and dealing with them quickly and effectively. To do this, we’ll be taking Charge, Execute and Gravity Well.

This build is good for solo leveling and Expeditions, but is more specialized toward Expeditions, by opting for Execute’s huge burst of damage over Whirlwind or Maelstrom.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (45)

While leveling this build, we start by taking Greed for the consistent damage and access to both Charge and Execute early on. We also hop immediately over to Mauler taking Heavy Pull and Enduring Strikes to get Gravity Well and its upgrade before we head into any Expedition.

After getting our main skills, it’s back over to the Reaper Tree to grab Death’s Embrace, then max Execute followed by Charge. Then we pick up Critical Condition and Keen Edge for fairly consistent DPS boosts and to get to Blood Lust.

If you’re playing only in a group, Critical Condition could be swapped for Critical Gains early on. As if you have someone tanking for you, you won’t need the extra critical chance when you can backstab.

After we grab Blood Lust, we focus on grabbing the rest of the passives in the Reaper Side of the tree that matter at all, particularly skipping Executioner’s Speed. Prioritize Critical Gains or Critical Condition, whichever you skipped prior to Blood Lust. Then grab Feed for the extra sustain.

Frustration could be skipped if desired, or replaced with Revenge in the Mauler Tree. Which mostly comes down to which passive you find more effective. You can also swap it for Crowded Protection, which will help mitigate area damage effects that may hit you. Finally, we cap off with Center of Attention.

Skill Perks, Usage, and Rotations

This build doesn’t really follow a set Rotation, mostly using skills off cooldown or as needed.

Charge will typically be used after you toss a Gravity Well into a large group of mobs, making for a potent one-two combo. You’ll almost always want to use the Unpredictable Strike for the increased damage, though this is harder to use without a little distance first..

Execute is your hard hitting attack meant for bosses or other beefy targets. If you use this on a tightly grouped up pack, you may be able to hit a few of them for heavy damage, but oftentimes will only hit one or two, which is perfectly fine as it will hit super hard.

Gravity Well is your AoE Tool, which you mostly want to use after your tank pulls a group on to them. This will catch a large group and hold them in place for your team’s AoE skills as well as get the most damage out of the Crowded Well passive.

For Weapon Perks, we’re going to take the standard DPS perks of Keen and Vicious. This last slot should honestly be Keenly Empowered for the highest DPS possible, but can also be Keenly Jagged or Refreshing Move.

For weapon Gems, we’ll generally want to run Diamonds. They’ll give us the most consistent damage increase as a DPS. Emeralds are a good alternative, allowing the guaranteed crits of Execute to hit even harder. When upgrading to Runeglass, you’ll often want to consider Punishing as your upgrade. Due to the slower nature of the Great axe and its high base damage, an Elemental upgrade of your choice can also be a great option.

For Armor Perks, we’ll specifically be looking for Refreshing and Refreshing Evasion alongside whichever of the Ward perks is best for your current Expedition, or Luck. Insatiable Gravity Well is also a nice pickup, but not entirely necessary here.

For our Amulet; we’ll want to take Refreshing, Strike Protection, and Empowered. Refreshing lowers our cooldowns, while Strike is the primary damage type for most PvE enemies. We Take Empowered, as we use several Empower effects in the build.

For our Earring; we’ll take another stack of Refreshing then take Evasive. Evasive will help make our Execute and other skills not pull aggro away from our tank. The last slot should be Luck or another stack of Refreshing Evasion.

For our Ring; we ideally want Slash Damage, Arcane Damage and another Stack of Refreshing. Slash and Arcane are the majority of our damage, so we want to boost them as much as possible. Refreshing is optional, and could be replaced with a stack of Luck or Refreshing Evasion as well.

Skill Rotation

We only have an opening Rotation, beyond that it’s whatever is off cooldown.

  1. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (46)Gravity Well
  2. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (47)Charge
  3. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (48)Light Attack
  4. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (49)Execute
  5. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (50)Light Attacks

We open with Gravity Well, to keep things still and grouped up so we can Charge into them and hit them with a nice strong hit. Then we can do a Light Attack and cancel it into Execute to chunk enemies down even more. Then we use Light Attacks to clean up what is left, or until another skill comes off cooldown.

The Meat Grinder

This is a mostly fun build that’s more geared toward Solo Open world play. It makes use of Whirlwind, Maelstrom, and Gravity Well.

This build is pretty fun to level with as it comes online pretty early and can be a fun play style. It focuses on trying to make each skill deal huge damage and dispatch groups very quickly and safely. It does this by grouping them together by every means possible, then spinning away with Whirlwind.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (51)

Our First three points are dedicated to grabbing our three skills, Maelstrom, Whirlwind, and Gravity Well along with one of its upgrades. After this, we grab Enduring Strike, so we decently safe, spammable damage.

Then we grab Center of Attention and Crowded Protection to help us safely deal damage and more of it. Then we focus on upgrading Whirlwind fully, which then gives us access to Mauler’s Fury. Mauler’s Fury is where this build starts to really come online, as Gravity Well and Maelstrom will be able to group things up for Whirlwind to stack on.

After grabbing Mauler’s Fury, we upgrade Maelstrom fully for the second attack. After this, we spend our remaining points in the Reaper Tree to grab as much damage and sustain as we can.

We take Greed for the easy to stack damage bonus that we can maintain between skills. Then we go for Critical Gains, which helps a bit with sustain. Frustration provides extra damage if we can trigger it before going doing our typical rotation and should last long enough for all of it. Then we grab Critical Condition and Feed to gain critical change and more consistent sustain when we get enemies low.

Skill Perks, Usage, and Rotations

Gravity Well is our opener skill, as we get a group of mobs following us, then turn and toss a Gravity Well at them, getting them into a nice little group for our other skills. It will also chunk them pretty hard depending on how many enemies are in it

Maelstrom would be used next for the quick burst alongside the Gravity Well detonation. This would also pull enemies into slightly better positioning for Whirlwind. Outside of the opening cast, we’ll be opting to hold this for another full rotation if needed.

Whirlwind would be our consistent DPS skill, aiming to hit at least 3+ enemies at a time to maximize its damage. As long as it doesn’t get interrupted, this skill can actually deal a ton of damage in a short span of time. Thanks to perks and passives, it’ll also be a bit safer than spamming Light Attacks.

For our Weapon, Keen and Vicious are going to be necessary to get the most damage out of this setup by allowing for more consistent and harder-hitting crits. The last slot should absolutely be Fortifying Whirlwind, which now provides a huge damage boost as a well as the high Fortify.

Generally Jasper will work best with this build. Since the whole goal is to group things together and AoE them down, you’re very likely to get hit during the process. When upgrading to Runeglass, you’ll often want to consider Punishing as your upgrade. Due to the slower nature of the Great axe and its high base damage, an Elemental upgrade of your choice can also be a great option as it’ll add a fair bit of damage to our AoE skills.

For our Armor we want to pick up Refreshing as well as the perk for each of our three skills as they all play a role in the setup. Enfeebling Maelstrom will make you way less vulnerable during Whirlwind, while Insatiable Gravity well adds extra damage and sustain to our setup. Beyond this, we absolutely want the Ward perks, to mitigate as much incoming damage as possible.

For our Amulet we want Strike Protection, Health and Refreshing. Most enemies in PvE will deal strike damage, save for most ranged enemies. Health gives us a bit of extra health to survive with, while refreshing helps with cooldowns. Health could be replaced with Fortified Recovery or Thrust Protection if you want more mitigation.

For our Earring we want Regenerating alongside Refreshing or Refreshing Ward. Regenerating helps us survive longer by giving us a bit of passive regeneration. Refreshing and Refreshing Ward both help us recover cooldowns faster.

For our Ring we absolutely want Keen Awareness and Slash Damage. These will help our damage and healing consistency via passives. The last Slot could be a couple things. Arcane Damage would pair nicely with Gravity Well and Chain Arcane if we go for it. We could use Leeching for additional sustain, or even another stack of Refreshing Ward to get our skills back a bit faster.

Skill Rotation

We have one rotation that we stick to, even holding Maelstrom until the other skills are ready as there’s no point to not just hold it.

  1. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (52)Light Attack
  2. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (53)Gravity Well
  3. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (54)Light Attack
  4. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (55)Maelstrom
  5. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (56)Light Attack
  6. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (57)Whirlwind
  7. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (58)Heavy Attacks
  8. New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (59)Repeat

This rotation ensures a few things. We’re setting up in this way to make sure Greed will be fully stacked for Whirlwind, and Mauler’s Fury will also be Stacked completely or at the very least mostly stacked before whirlwind, enemies will be Weakened, and we’ll be at or near full Health.

This let’s us go into a whirlwind that’s getting it’s damage heavily increased by passives and perks with very low risk, even against a larger group. Then we use Heavy Attacks to clean up, as Enduring Strike will let us do so fairly safely.

The PvP Build

This is probably the build you came looking for the most. This is the typical Reap, Charge, and Gravity Well build that’s common in PvP.

This build uses Light attacks for most of its damage, opting to use primarily skills with the high catch power to create advantages in whatever PvP fight they get into.

New World GREAT AXE Guide and Best Builds (60)

We start the leveling process by taking Greed for the consistent damage it can provide. This also gives us the option of Reap or Charge as the first skill, of which Charge tends to be better for mobility and faster leveling.

After grabbing those two skills, we head over to the Mauler Tree, grabbing Mauler’s Resolve and Enduring Strikes to reach Gravity Well. At this point you can also grab the Crowded Well Upgrade if you wish to, but it’s not a huge priority here, as most PvP is 1v1 unless you get into a big skirmish or war. It can help with leveling though, so it’s an optional choice. You can get it at any point after picking up Blood Lust if you don’t want to delay Blood Lust another level.

After grabbing Gravity Well, it’s back to the Reaper Tree to Upgrade Reap and Charge. These upgrades add a ton of extra damage to these skills, and can make them deal way more than expected for this point.

Next we grab Critical Condition and Keen Edge to give us a bit more consistency with critical hits and make them hit harder. At this point we get access to Blood Lust.

All the remaining passives after Blood Lust can be taken in any order. Critical Gains and Feed give us extra sustain. Frustration and Death’s Embrace give us extra damage.

If you wanted a more War or large skirmish focused build, swap Frustration and Feed for Center of Attention and Crowded protection on the Mauler Tree. Center of Attention will provide more consistent damage compared to Frustration. Crowded Protection provide a more consistent defense as you’ll be getting healed constantly anyways. If you want you can also swap Critical Gains to Frustration if you want more damage and want to rely entirely on healers to heal you.

Skill Perks, Usage, and Rotations

Charge is generally used to get in range for Blood Lust or to use Gravity Well. It can also be used as a chase/damage tool if you can get onto someone without using it. Just because it does high damage does not mean it needs to be used for that damage.

Gravity Well is generally used to close a short distance or prevent escape attempts. In Large Skirmishes and Wars, it’ll often be used to disrupt the backline of the enemy, where all the squishy DPS and Healers are. It can also be used defensively as an area denial tool keeping enemies off a defense point or to keep them off your own backline.

Reap is generally used to disrupt back line foes in wars and skirmishes, or to forcibly pull your opponents off a point. It’s a great answer to dash skills. Most dash skills can be interrupted and this has a high enough range to where if you were already on top of them and they dash away in a predictable manner you can interrupt it or catch them and pull them right back to you.

For our Weapon we absolutely want Keen, Vicious and Refreshing Charge. Keen and Vicious help with critical hit consistency and damage. The only reason Refreshing Charge is on the weapon is to maximize the Cooldown refund when you land it offensively.

Emeralds are really good here, with Malachite being a solid second option. Emeralds are more consistent due to the lack of CC effects to trigger Malachite for long period of time. Jaspers are also an option, as you’re likely to take some return damage even if you catch someone unaware. When upgrading to Runeglass, you’ll often want to consider Punishing as your upgrade. Due to the slower nature of the Great axe and its high base damage, an Elemental upgrade of your choice can also be a great option.

For our Armor, Resilient and Freedom are both worth stacking up. In most cases you’ll be in the front lines taking a beating, so Refreshing Ward can help you get cooldowns back, helping you get out of a sticky situation or wreak even more havoc.

For our Amulet, we’ll want to get Slash Protection and Health. Slash and Strike Protection cover a lot of the melee hits we’ll be taking in these large fights. Health helps us soak a bit more of any ranged or magic damage hitting us.

For our Earring, Regenerating and Nimble are both great pickups. Regenerating helps us recover health slowly. Nimble give us a bit of extra Stamina Regen letting us block more melee hits as needed. The last slot can be Refreshing or Refreshing Ward for cooldown recovery.

For our Ring we’ll absolutely want Slash Damage, Refreshing or Refreshing Ward, and Leeching. Slash Damage and Keen Awareness help us get the most damage we can for PvP. Leeching helps us sustain decently, as we’ll often be hitting a number of people at once. Refreshing and Refreshing Ward help with the Great Axe’s Cooldown.

Skill Rotation

This build doesn’t have a rotation, as each skill has its own purpose and doesn’t really fit into a set rotation. Read the usage section above for a good idea of how each skill is used. In War or skirmishes, listen for your group leader’s call on what to do, as they’ll be determining the best time to use Gravity Well. The other skills are a personal judgement call.

Great Axe Weapon Pairings

The Great Axe, being the heavy weapon it is, scales purely off Strength. This limits most of its functional combos to melee weapons.

This makes the top 3 pairings for the Great Axe the Greatsword, Sword and Shield, and War Hammer.

Greatsword

The Greatsword can be a flexible tool offering greater offense, or just being a great option to use defensively. I personally preferred a more hybrid build, taking some it for offense as well as its defensive capabilities. It’s a great option for PvE and PvP alike due to its flexibility.

To learn more about the Greatsword, you can check out our Greatsword Guide and Best Builds. This will help you plan out a strong build, should you opt for this pairing.

Sword and Shield

The Sword and Shield provide a lot of defensive power and setup, thanks to its stronger crowd control options. This makes for a very bulky setup that and flexibly be a durable or high offense as well, as the Sword itself isn’t strictly defensive. However, the pairing of the Great Axe’s Offensive strength combined with the Sword and Shield’s defensive strength is a very strong combo.

To learn more about the Sword and Shield, you can check out our Sword and Shield Guide and Best Builds. This will help you plan out a strong build, should you opt for this pairing.

War Hammer

The War Hammer is a very strong combo, as both weapons scale purely off Strength, leading to high damage on both weapon. Both are AoE powerhouses, letting them create a path of devastation and your cleave and quake your war through foes.

To learn more about the War Hammer, you can check out our War Hammer Guide and Best Builds. This will help you plan out a strong build, should you opt for this pairing.

This build is covered in-depth in our Great Axe and War Hammer “Warring Bruiser” Build Guide. This guide covers the playstyle and gear in-depth, giving you all the information you need to succeed with it.

This is the end to this very in-depth guide to the Great Axe in New World. We hope you have learned everything you need to know about this weapon, its usage, skills, perks, builds, combos, and ability rotations. The icons used in this guide are pulled from newworldfans.com‘s database.
