As of the second quarter of 2023, Marks & Spencer was rated as the second most popular home or department store in the United Kingdom (UK), receiving 74 percent positive opinion from the UK public. Ahead of M&S, home improvement and DIY chain, B&Q ranked in first place, by a margin of just one percentage point.
Leading UK department stores
The two most popular department stores in the UK are Marks and Spencer and John Lewis. As well as general merchandise, Marks and Spencer also has a food division, which actually generates a larger share of revenue than their clothing and home division, which aligns with their department stores. John Lewis is part of the John Lewis Partnership, which also owns a supermarket brand, Waitrose. Of the companies’ department store segments of John Lewis and M&S, John Lewis generates a marginally higher revenue, at 3.8 billion British pounds.
Leading UK home stores
The most popular home store, B&Q, is owned by Kingfisher plc. This group also owns several brands worldwide, including another brand in the ranking, Screwfix. Screwfix finished sixth on the list, with a popularity score of 69 percent. With the sales of these two brands, among others, Kingfisher plc is one of the leading retailers in the United Kingdom based on worldwide sales.
