Wedding Website Dos and Don'ts (2024)

A wedding website is a great tool every bride or groom should take advantage of when planning their wedding. It should also be one of the first tasks you complete on your wedding to-do list. This is because everything you guests need to know about your wedding from the date to where you’re registered can be found here. By providing all of this information in one central location, you’ll make your wedding guest’s lives easier and take some stress out of wedding planning!

Think of your wedding website as a guide book for your guests. This is especially important if you have a lot of out of town guests attending your wedding, or during times when there is important information guests need to know about (such as social distancing guidelines).

The more information you provide, the fewer questions you’ll have to answer as your wedding day approaches. Don’t forget to include fun details as well such as how you met or who is in your bridal party – after all, every detail about your wedding is important!

Here’s what you should keep in mind when creating your wedding website.

DO – Be Clear About Dress Code

There’s nothing more stressful as a wedding guest than trying to guess what to wear. You can help your guests avoid an uncomfortable situation by being over or underdressed by simply letting guests know the intended dress code. Try to use familiar terminology such as black tie, co*cktail attire, semi-formal, or dressy-casual. It also helps to list some attire suggestions to help guests understand your vision better.

For example for a black tie wedding you might add – tuxedos or dark suits for gentlemen, gowns or co*cktail attire for the ladies.

For dressy-causal wedding attire you might add – button down shirts and slacks for gentlemen, sun dresses for the ladies.

Don’t assume guests will understand your attire preference, instead give them examples so they can feel confident in their choice.

DON’T – Share Your Website on Social Media

Unless you want to break the news to friends and family you aren’t inviting to celebrate your big day, keep your wedding website off of social media. Yes, it’s exciting to share all the details and photos leading up to your wedding day, but it sends a mixed message and can be confusing to those you know. The bottom line? Avoid many awkward “sorry you’re not invited” conversations by only distributing your wedding website to invited guests.

DO – Provide All Wedding Details

Any event that has to do with your wedding such as day-after brunches, ceremony location and times, reception details, and hotel block information should be included on your website. Include directions and addresses to the ceremony and reception sites, as well as what time events are taking place. If you are reserving a hotel block you should also provide details on the hotel, and the rate guests can expect to pay. Also if there is a shuttle service or transportation available from your hotel to the reception hall, you should include this information as well.

If there is important information guests should know about such as your ceremony being outdoors, or a mask requirement alert guests to this too. If there is a detail that may affect a guest in any way, it’s better to provide the information.

DON’T – Include Details or Events That Aren’t Intended for Everyone

If you are having any events that are reserved just for the immediate family, such as certain religious or cultural celebrations, or are intended only for the bridal party – such as your rehearsal dinner or bachelor/bachelorette parties, leave those off your wedding website.

Including them may cause guests to inadvertently believe they are invited to attend these celebrations or events.

DO – Create a Shortlink

If you’re sending out physical wedding invitations, use a short link website such as bit.ly to create a shortened link to your website. Unless you’ve purchased a custom domain, the URLs for a wedding website from sites like theknot.com can be quite lengthy. Make it easier for your guests to locate your website by creating a custom short link.

DO – Include Registry Information

Your wedding website is the perfect place to provide all of the details for your wedding registry (or registries). This way guests who are attending your bridal shower, wedding, or even guests who can’t attend but wish to send a gift can still do so easily.

DO – Provide Local Recommendations

This tip is ideal for those who have a lot of out of town guests, or for weddings that have a large gap between the ceremony and reception. Let guests know of fun attractions in the area, wineries, restaurants, parks, or local events that may be taking place.
