What's the chevy cruze valve cover torque sequence? (2024)

The bolts in the valve cover on a Chevy Cruze need to be torqued to 79 inch pounds each. You will want to use a calibrated torque wrench while doing this to make sure that You get them accurate. Too much torque and they could strip out, and too little and there could be leaks. When You are torquing down a valve cover the first thing You should do is put every bolt in place and make them just hand tight. Once everything is in place go around in a star pattern starting with the bolt that is closest to the center of the cover. Start there, then go to the bottom right, then the top left, and so on until You have torqued down every bolt to the 7p inch pounds of torque.

If any of y’all truly thought it would be a good idea to torque your valve cover bolts to 79 FT LBS, you should NOT be doing your own work… pay someone next time…

The 79 ft lbs is bullsh*t!!!! Just snapped a bolt I’d like to find the sorry c********r who said that and beat his skull in

CaptSid Spaulding June 11, 2020

The previous answer is incorrect, valve cover torque spec should be measured in Inch Pounds and not Foot Pounds.

Tater March 11, 2021

79 inch pounds is accurate, 79 ft lbs would snapplastic valve cover before you got half way there, and maybe strip your bolt holes in the aluminum head. And just for reference 79 inch pounds is about 6.6 foot pounds.

The bolt snapped at 71 ft lbs it’s the first f*****g answer to show up on an internet search and I’m on the side of the road and if I drive it there could be a potential fire from oil on spark plugs and boom!!! Forum owner pull this the f**k down a*****e!!!

Common Sense May 3, 2022

As soon as I seen 79 foot pounds I knew it was wrong. The plastic and bolts could never handle that much pressure

Tony December 13, 2022

This is why we have anm in europe. Cant confuse it with some other made up measurement

Reading is fundamental February 26, 2023

I cannot believe there is so many people who does not see the word INCH. Are yall reading the word 79 then just stopping right there? I really cannot understand how yall are mistaking INCH from FOOT. They don’t even look similar.

79 Inch pound for a 1.8 motor. 71 Inch pound 1.4 Motor. Keep that in mind

Being a mechanicfor many years before stopping. The proper torque spec is 79 inch pounds Usually you would hand tighten all the bolts. On your first pass tightening the bolts start at 21 inch pounds. Next 44 inch pounds and finally 79 inch pounds. Many torque wrenches are foot pound torque wrenches. But Ibought a inch pound torque wrench specifically forthis instants. A foot pound torque wrench at 7 pounds is hard to detect the click when you reach the intended/ pre set torque that you have set your torque wrench too. I hope this helps

Dalton April 8, 2024

As a mechanic you guys should read more the original post obviously said 71 or 79 inch pounds not foot pounds INCH SO STOP BEING ILLITERATE AND READ

$32 torque wrench at O’Reilly’s, a bit rudimentary in design but does the trick Without an extension for the 1/4” to 8mm for the bolts it’s a little tricky to get to each bolt head and didn’t feel like making a trip back to the store so it takes a bit of extra patience but it can be done. Also, Foot lbs > Inch pounds, stay safe out there.

Vasy April 13, 2023

25 mm

In the GM repair manual it is listed as 71 ft lbs but as many have stated you will definitely break the bolt or strip it out. I have found many inaccurate things in the manuals on this 1.4L engine and the Cruze. For example according to the owners manual with oil filter you are to use 4.25 quarts of oil. If you do it will be well over the dipstick as I have found out.

Early muddycustomer's November 16, 2022

Look according to gm 8-10ftlbs

Psul November 2, 2022

Ha! I made the same mistake, snapping the bolt! The fix……a left hand drill bit. Backed out what was left. Whew!

Skg July 28, 2022

I literally just did the same thing

Matthew lobberecht November 21, 2021

That's incorrect. It's 71 inch pounds not foot pounds.

Brian November 7, 2021
