If a movie is filled with stereotypical characters, a generic plot, and a bunch of incongruencies, at least own it. This is where The Meg fails to deliver.

'The Meg' fits the bill for any creature feature film, but the bonus is Jason Statham. In my opinion, he alone raises the bar for this type of film at least a couple of levels beyond most of the generic movies and this is a refreshing take on the genre. A few of the characters are developed just enough to like.

The best explanation is that Bingbing may have quietly taken a step back from acting to pursue other interests. If she has retired from acting, Suyin's death in Meg 2: The Trench makes a bit more sense. The film was released in 2023 and she has no acting credits since 2022.

4 Suyin Zhang (Li Bingbing)

Despite surviving the oceanic horror of The Meg, Li Bingbing's character sits out the events of The Meg 2. However, her young daughter Meiying (Sophia Cai), one of the few characters to see the Meg up close and live to tell about it, does come back for the second movie.

This film has a lot more jumpscares than the first, that's the scariest part of it though. Jumpscares occur throughout and are loud and scary. In an extremely gruesome scene, the POV of people swallowed by a shark is shown. Its teeth are visible cutting through their bodies with blood leaking from them.
